How to create a gallery wall in 3 simple steps
How toWhen I first moved into my studio apartment as a senior in college, I wanted to personalize my space, but I had a couple problems. First, I didn’t have a lot of space to do it. I was living in a small studio, and because of the amazing ceiling to floor windows, the entry way and kitchen, and the bathroom placement, there were only 2 big walls for me to decorate along with one small wall. My second problem was that I wasn’t allowed to paint the walls or nail anything heavy to them due to the policies in my building. I had to get creative, and decided to create gallery walls with art I created, bought, was gifted, or printed!
These were just a few of the walls I spiced up in my apartment. I felt like they made my place feel a lot more like home, even though I wasn’t allowed to change a lot in the apartment. So, how can you create a gallery wall for your space? All you need to do, is follow 3 easy rules!
1. Plan your layout
There are multiple ways to design your gallery wall, and it all comes down to what you enjoy looking at and what fits in your space. As you can see I chose different layouts for different parts of my apartment. In the small space above my dining room I chose a diagnoal layout to make the space look larger and give a directionality to the work I was displaying. Above my desk I chose to make it a simple collage wall, but allow for the pictures to be off center to give it a more abstract and organic feel! 🙂 Here are some other example layouts:
2. Select a mix of pieces
To make a gallery wall appealing to the eye, you are going to want to include a variety of colors, textures, and types of pieces. This will allow for you to include different artwork and photographs that you enjoy, but also create a unique wall that matches the look you are going for in your space!
In my gallery wall, I included a variety of colors, as well as different types of artwork. I used portraits and lettering. I also used black and white graphite pencil drawings, and drawings made with colored pencils or markers. You can also play with size variations and differences in the orientation of the pieces you select. I have a mix between landscape and vertical pieces in this gallery wall as well!
3. Select unique pieces
Not only are you going to want your wall as a whole to look special and creative, but you are going to want each piece to be unique. The fun thing about this is that you get to select each one yourself, and can carefully cultivate your gallery wall over time. This is where my store comes in handy… 🙂
